Charging at home is the cheapest and easiest way to run an electric car. A dedicated wall charger is faster and safer than a plug into a household socket, and it needs its own circuit fitted by a qualified electrician.
💷 EV Charger Installation Prices
| What you need | FE Maintenance | Typical London price (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Installation only — you supply the charger | from £400 | £350 – £600 |
| We supply and fit the charger | £400 + the price of the charger | £1,000 – £1,500 |
| The charger itself (7 kW home charger) | Depends on the model | about £400 – £900 |
| Consumer unit upgrade, if needed | Fixed quote | about £400 – £1,000 |
| Longer cable run or groundworks | Fixed quote | about £200 – £650 |
Typical prices are from published 2026 UK and London price guides. We give you a fixed price after a quick survey or photos of your consumer unit and where you want the charger — before any work starts.
✅ What a Standard Installation Includes
- Mounting the charger on an outside wall, close to where you park
- A new dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, with a cable run of up to about 10 metres
- The right protection for EV charging — the correct RCD and earthing arrangement for your property, as the wiring regulations require
- Testing, an electrical installation certificate, and notifying building control (a new circuit is notifiable work)
- Notifying your local electricity network (DNO), as required for home chargers
- Setting the charger up and showing you how to use it and the app
The work itself usually takes 2–4 hours. Allow some time beforehand for the network notification — occasionally the network needs to check or upgrade your supply first.
🔌 Buying Your Own Charger? Check These First
Many people buy their charger online and just need it fitted — that’s fine, and it’s our “installation only” price. Before you buy, check:
- It’s a smart charger. By law, home chargers sold in Great Britain must be smart, with off-peak default charging hours and security features. A second-hand charger from a private seller may not meet this.
- Power: most homes have a single-phase supply, which suits a 7 kW charger. Faster 22 kW chargers need a three-phase supply that few homes have.
- Tethered or untethered: a tethered charger has the cable attached; an untethered one has a socket and you use your car’s cable.
- Cable length and where it will go — make sure it reaches your car’s charging port comfortably.
Send us the make and model before you book and we’ll confirm it suits your home. The charger’s own warranty stays with the seller or manufacturer.
🔍 What Can Push the Price Up
- An old consumer unit — if it has no space or doesn’t meet current standards, it may need replacing first. See consumer unit replacement.
- A long cable run — for example, from a meter at the front of the house to a driveway at the back.
- Digging or drilling — cable under a path or driveway, or through thick walls.
- The electricity supply — sometimes the network needs to upgrade an old main fuse before a charger can be added. That’s arranged with the network.
- Flats and shared parking — you’ll need permission from the freeholder or managing agent, and the cable route can be longer.
🎁 The Government Grant: up to £500 Off
The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) chargepoint grant gives 75% off the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500, if you:
- rent your home, or own a flat, and
- have your own private off-street parking space, and
- own, lease or have on order an eligible electric vehicle.
If you live in a house you own, you can’t get this grant. Landlords have a separate scheme. The grant is claimed through an installer authorised by OZEV, so check with your installer before booking. Details: GOV.UK, “Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for renters or flat owners”.
🏠 Landlords and Letting Agents
A charger is a selling point for a rental, but it’s part of the electrical installation — it’s inspected at the next EICR, so it must be installed and certified properly. We can fit the charger and do the EICR, gas safety certificate and PAT testing for the same property, all kept in your free client portal.
